Lives up to billing in 2023
Smith finished the regular season with 158 total tackles in 16 games to go with 1.5 sacks and one interception. He chipped in eight pass breakups and a forced fumble as well.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year old was a tackling machine yet again in 2023, as he finished sixth in the NFL in total tackles and recorded more than 150 total tackles for the third straight year. Smith isn't used much as a pass rusher in Baltimore's defense, which explains his lack of sack production relative to previous years. Smith remains an elite IDP option as the bedrock of Baltimore's defense and will look to continue that throughout the postseason and into 2024.

Contract demands led to trade
The Bears decided to trade Smith because they were not confident they could find common ground in contract talks during the offseason, Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith and the Bears entered the season on rocky terms, as he demanded a trade and conducted a hold-in during training camp before ultimately returning to practice. General manager Ryan Poles told the media that the two sides continued to negotiate after that, with the team's last offer coming one week prior to the season. Rather than risk losing Smith for nothing, Poles opted to deal him for a package of draft picks.

The Bears decided to deal Smith for draft picks rather than pay him what he wanted, but the Ravens were more than happy to take on that burden, snapping him up just before Halloween last year and then handing the linebacker a five-year, $100 million extension in January. Smith's play never flagged, and he topped 160 tackles for the second consecutive season, 83 in eight games with Chicago and 86 in nine for Baltimore. The 26-year-old rounded out his elite production with 4.5 sacks and a career-high three interceptions, and his athleticism and instincts are a perfect fit in John Harbaugh's scheme.
