Criscuolo signed as a free agent after spending two seasons in Detroit's minor-league system and made a good impression with 34 points in 51 games with AHL Rochester. His performance earned him a nine-game stint with the Sabres even though he failed to register a single point and finished with a minus-4 rating. While his audition was short, it also highlighted the deficiencies in the 26-year-old forward's game, namely that his offense isn't good enough to warrant a top-six role and his lack of size makes him a poor fit as a bottom-six player. Criscuolo is in the final year of his contract and does not figure into the Sabres' long-term plans, though he may get the occasional call-up if the Sabres need help on offense.
Criscuolo was signed to a two-year entry-level deal after spending the 2016-17 season with AHL Grand Rapids where he scored 41 points in 76 games. The undersized 25-year-old forward and former Harvard Crimson captain uses his speed and hockey IQ to play an effective two-way game, and will most likely spend the season with AHL Rochester as he slowly works his way up the ranks.
