Merrick is fully exempt for the upcoming season thanks to his victory at the Northern Trust Open. It's conceivable that Merrick's poor play last season could be blamed on complacency, knowing that his card was secure no matter how he played last year, but even if that's not the case, he should have no problem getting above the number he posted last season. He hasn't been the most consistent player over the years, so he's not a "must-have", but he should get major consideration in salary cap leagues this season.
Merrick picked up a win early in the 2013 season, but failed to capitalize on the momentum after that. Merrick's been at this for a while now and it's good to see a him get a win, but in order to take the next step he'll need to show more consistency. I'm not sure we'll get that this year and if he can't find another win in 2014, it'll be tough to match his 2013 number. Merrick is a no go in salary leagues and should go in the 50-60 range in draft leagues.
Merrick had a thoroughly unspectacular 2012 season, but it was enough to secure his card for the this year. His best finish came at the FedEx St. Jude Classic where he finished alone in second place. His only other top-10 came at the Wyndham Championship a week prior to the FedEx playoffs. Last season wasn't the first time Merrick topped $1 million. He's accomplished the feat a couple times, peaking at about $1.4 million both times. Merrick's upside is not high enough to justify a selection in salary cap leagues this year. In draft leagues, Merrick should go in the ninth round.
After a slow rookie season in 2007, Merrick turned his game around and spent the following two years in the $1-million club. The two years that followed, however, were not as strong. He has managed to keep his card the last four years, but he's not getting much done with that card. Merrick does appear to have some talent and might be worth a look if his price is low.
Merrick's game has improved gradually over his three years on the PGA TOUR, but he's lacking the spark that will send him to the next level. His game should continue to improve in 2010, but don't expect to get a lot of bang for your buck here.
Merrick started his Sophomore season well, but he faded after the US Open in June. The only good showing post June was a top-10 at the Reno-Tahoe Open. Merrick has actually played well at that event twice, unfortunately that event does not boast the strongest field of the year. Merrick is still a year or two off. He should continue to improve.
