Carradine has been widely considered a bust after the 49ers used a second-round pick on the defensive lineman in 2013, but the 49ers may have found a role more suited to his abilities. Playing at outside linebacker could result in more sack opportunities while not limiting his opportunities to rack up tackles. He would have to win the starting job out of camp to be relevant, but that is a real possibility with Aaron Lynch suspended for the first four games of the season.
With the departure of both Justin Smith and Ray McDonald this offseason, Carradine has a real shot to earn a starting defense end position out of training camp. He served well as depth behind the aforementioned veterans last season (16 solo tackles, 3.0 sacks) and could have sneaky IDP value for some tackles and sacks if he lands a starting spot.
Carradine is working his way back from a severe knee injury he sustained in 2012. If he is fully healthy, he could compete for a backup role on the defensive line in 2014.
The second-round pick in the 2013 draft is still in recovery from Novemeber surgery to repair a torn ACL. He is expected to make the 53-man roster and be ready to play by the time the season opens, but will be limited mostly to work on special teams as he sits as a reserve behind the likes of Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks.
