Thomas announced Wednesday that he would retire from the NFL, Andrew Gribble of the Browns' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old Thomas, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, thus closes out a distinguished career that saw him anchor the Browns' offensive line until this past season, when he ruptured his left triceps tendon on Oct. 22. The stellar left tackle, who opened his career by playing an NFL-record 10,363 consecutive snaps until last season's injury, is clearly a tough act to follow, but in anticipation of Wednesday's news, the Browns are poised to add two tackles (Donald Stephenson and Chris Hubbard) in free agency. Thomas looks like a no-doubt first-ballot Hall of Famer after earning 10 Pro Bowl selections in 11 seasons, including seven first-team All-Pro honors.
