Weekly Rankings: Week 1 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 1 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

Sunday Update complete.

Updated to reflect Ezekiel Elliott playing this week, and the postponement of the MIA-TB game.

Here are my rankings (if you want a second opinion, please see our formula-based projections - these are not tied into my rankings at all) for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. ***Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.***

**** PLEASE READ: (On a quick aside - our research shows that even though PPR leagues are becoming more popular, standard scoring leagues still outpace them, and moreover there are more 1/2pt PPR leagues coming into play as leagues adjust to the higher passing environment in the NFL. Beyond that, it makes more sense to create PPR rankings for the Flex position, and extrapolate those across the individual positions than it does in reverse. You may choose to disagree, but my stance here is pretty inflexible.)****

Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 5:00 pm PT. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule

I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it. If there is no such note, that means it's my first pass at the rankings for this current week.

The first week is always the trickiest. I try not to rely too much on matchups early on - personnel changes, both on the field and in the coaching staffs, dictate so much change, as does a critical injury. By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?". And then refer to the rankings again before asking a generic starting decision question. If you really desire a response to a starting question that doesn't have added complexity, please use our Ask An Expert service - it comes with your subscription. My response will correspond with the rankings.

Note: (Ankle) No longer on the Jaguars' injury report.
103.*Tyler Lockett SEA at GB
Note: (Leg) Full participant in Wednesday's practice, but listed behind Richardson on the depth chart. ***Officially listed as questionable, but expected to play.***
104.Mike Wallace BAL at Cin
105.*Kenny Golladay DET vs. Ari
Note: (Ankle) Limited during Thursday's practice. ***Limited all week, but is active this week.***
106.Ted Ginn NO at Min
107.Sterling Shepard NYG at Dal
108.Zay Jones BUF vs. NYJ
109.Cole Beasley DAL vs. NYG
110.*Eric Ebron DET vs. Ari
Note: (Hamstring) No longer on the Lions' injury report.
111.Jack Doyle IND at LAR
Note: Doyle's competition at TE for the Colts, Erik Swoope, is out for the year with a knee injury.
112.*Darren McFadden DAL vs. NYG
Note: Downgraded with Elliott allowed to play this week.

Kickers

1.Justin Tucker BAL at Cin
2.Stephen Gostkowski NE vs. KC
3.Matt Bryant ATL at Chi
4.Dan Bailey DAL vs. NYG
5.Dustin Hopkins WAS vs. Phi
6.Mason Crosby GB vs. Sea
7.*Younghoe Koo LAC at Den
Note: Beat out Josh Lambo for the Chargers' starting job.
8.Chris Boswell PIT at Cle
9.Graham Gano CAR at SF
10.Greg Zuerlein LA vs. Ind
11.Ryan Succop TEN vs. Oak
12.Phil Dawson ARZ at Det
13.Caleb Sturgis PHI at Was
14.Blair Walsh SEA at GB
15.Brandon McManus DEN vs. LAC
16.*Cairo Santos KC at NE
Note: Held off Sam Ficken to retain the Chiefs' starting job.
17.*Giorgio Tavecchio OAK at Ten
Note: ***Signed to replace Sebastian Janikowski for now.***
18.*Randy Bullock CIN vs. Bal
Note: Won the starting kicking battle for the Bengals, though rookie Jake Elliott remains on the practice squad.
19.*Aldrick Rosas NYG at Dal
Note: Beat out Mike Nugent for the Giants' starting gig.
20.Wil Lutz NO at Min
21.Stephen Hauschka BUF vs. NYJ
22.*Adam Vinatieri IND at LAR
Note: I'm giving Vinatieri a significant downgrade due to Luck being out.
23.Matt Prater DET vs. Ari
24.Jason Myers JAC at Hou
25.*Connor Barth CHI vs. Atl
Note: Held off Roberto Aguayo for the starting job.
26.*Ka'imi Fairbairn HOU vs. Jax
Note: Beat out Nick Novak for the starting job.
27.Kai Forbath MIN vs. NO
28.Robbie Gould SF vs. Car
29.Zane Gonzalez CLE vs. Pit
30.*Chandler Catanzaro NYJ at Buf
Note: Had a bad preseason but still won the starting job for the Jets over Ross Martin.
31.*Sebastian Janikowski OAK at Ten
Note: Might be at risk of being cut due to concerns about his back, plus unwillingness to restructure contract. This might all be a ploy to get him to renegotiate, however. Contract reworked, all is well. ***Placed on IR (likely to return) due to the injured disc in his back, will miss at least eight weeks.***

Defenses

1.Houston Texans vs. Jax
2.Denver Broncos vs. LAC
3.Arizona Cardinals at Det
4.*Buffalo Bills vs. NYJ
Note: Really good streaming option for this week against the Jets. This will be a recording all season long.
5.New England Patriots vs. KC
6.Pittsburgh Steelers at Cle
Note: Great early schedule, as Jerry Donabedian points out in this week's Streaming Defenses article.
7.*Los Angeles Rams vs. Ind
Note: Aaron Donald is still holding out. But the Rams are at home facing the Colts without Andrew Luck. Donald's holdout continues, though Sean McVay hasn't yet ruled him out in case it gets resolved.
8.Seattle Seahawks at GB
9.New York Giants at Dal
10.Minnesota Vikings vs. NO
11.Los Angeles Chargers at Den
12.Carolina Panthers at SF
13.Atlanta Falcons at Chi
14.Philadelphia Eagles at Was
15.Jacksonville Jaguars at Hou
16.New York Jets at Buf
Note: Could be a decent streaming option, but I fear that the weight of an awful offense is going to drag down this unit, putting them on the field constantly.
17.*Cincinnati Bengals vs. Bal
Note: The Bengals will be without Adam Jones and Vontaze Burfict (suspensions), and starting safety Shawn Williams (dislocated elbow). But they'll also face a Baltimore offense that didn't have Joe Flacco (back) all preseason.
18.Green Bay Packers vs. Sea
19.Tennessee Titans vs. Oak
20.*Kansas City Chiefs at NE
Note: It's tough to reach on a defense in your draft and then not want to use them in Week 1, but that's where you have to be with the Chiefs.
21.New Orleans Saints at Min
22.Washington Redskins vs. Phi
23.Baltimore Ravens at Cin
24.Detroit Lions vs. Ari
25.Dallas Cowboys vs. NYG
26.Cleveland Browns vs. Pit
Note: Maybe I'm early on this, but I don't think that the Browns' defense will be that bad. Myles Garrett is out multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain, so maybe the Browns' defense will be that bad after all.
27.Oakland Raiders at Ten
28.*Indianapolis Colts at LAR
Note: Vontae Davis (groin) will be out multiple weeks.
29.San Francisco 49ers vs. Car
30.Chicago Bears vs. Atl
