Leaves school for draft
January 18, 2021
Fields announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he will forgo his remaining eligibility at Ohio State to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.
ANALYSIS
Fields' decision to end his collegiate career was fully expected after he turned in a brilliant junior season that ended with the Buckeyes finishing as the national runner-up. The star signal-caller projects as a potential top-five selection in the draft, and he could be the second quarterback off the board after Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, who is widely projected No. 1 overall pick. In just eight games with the Buckeyes in 2020, Fields amassed 2,100 passing yards and a 22:6 TD:INT while also rushing for 383 yards and five scores. The Buckeyes lack a clear heir apparent for Fields, so expect the team to stage an extended competition among several quarterbacks throughout the spring and fall.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2019
In most years, a 40:1 TD:INT and 10 rushing touchdowns at the helm of an undefeated team would give a player a pretty compelling case for the Heisman. That was Fields last season, but he was up against a historic season from Joe Burrow for the award. Now Burrow is off to the NFL and Fields is the top overall player in college fantasy football, and he’s arguably worthy of that distinction in a non-fantasy lens as well. At 6-3, 228 with powerful athleticism and a big arm, Fields simply takes over games every time he steps on the field. He had eight games with at least one rushing touchdown on top of multiple passing touchdowns. Tack on the fact that he plays in a well-designed offense loaded with weapons like Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson and there’s reason to believe Fields can come close to replicating his 2019 passing stats. There’s also a chance that Fields’ rushing production sees a slight uptick with J.K. Dobbins gone and Ohio State having somewhat of an unproven backfield by its usual standards. Fields’ ability to affect the game through the air and on the ground, along with his stellar supporting cast, make him the clear top player for fantasy in 2020.
Investing a high draft pick on a player with 39 career passes playing in a new system requires a leap of faith, but when it comes to a player of Fields' talent, the payoff could lead to league championships. The No.2 overall player in the class of 2018 is a natural passer with a live arm to go with the frame and athleticism to be devastating as a runner. It'll be difficult to replicate Dwayne Haskins' passing production, but Fields is the superior athlete who will be able to post major rushing production to go with strong passing numbers.
