Opts out of bowl, entering draft
Pro Draft Prep
December 11, 2023
Hartman announced Monday that he will opt out of Notre Dame's Sun Bowl matchup with Oregon State on Dec. 29 and will begin preparations for the 2024 NFL Draft, Tyler Horka of On3.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hartman initially suggested after Notre Dame closed its regular season in late November that he would play in the Fighting Irish's bowl game, but after further thought, he'll close the books on his six-year collegiate career. Hartman excelled between stops at Wake Forest and Notre Dame and concludes his time in college with 134 touchdown passes and 15,656 passing yards, good for third and fifth, respectively, in FBS history. He was also a threat on the ground, accounting for 978 yards and 20 rushing scores. Steve Angeli is expected to take over as the Fighting Irish's starting quarterback for the Sun Bowl, with Kenny Minchey stepping in as the top backup.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
2020
Hartman broke out as a fourth-year starter in 2021 by throwing for over 4,200 yards with 39 touchdowns and 11 rushing scores after combining for 38 scores in his previous three seasons. The team context suggests he can maintain that level of production as Wake Forest runs the most up-tempo offense in FBS (81.4 plays per game) and A.T Perry, who caught 15 scores in 2021, returns. Jaquarii Roberson is gone but Wake Forest also gets its No.2 receiver from 2020, Donavon Greene, back in the mix. It’s all set up for Hartman to turn in another standout season.
Hartman is at the helm of one of the most up-tempo offenses in the country, which bolsters his floor as he gets plenty of chances to rack up counting stats based on volume. His overall production left something to be desired despite that last season, finishing with 13 passing touchdowns in nine games with an 8.1 YPA and a completion rate under 60 percent. Hartman's rushing production, which was impressive as a freshman, evaporated, too. He ran for -1 yards on 63 attempts and had two touchdowns. The system will prop up Hartman's baseline but it'll be on him to make strides as a passer.
With Jamie Newman transferring to Georgia, Hartman appears free of the shadow that he battled for playing time over the past two seasons, with each earning and losing the job to one another. In two games last year where Hartman saw extended action, he threw for 658 yards and two scores, and Hartman also had seven multi-touchdown showings as a freshman in nine games before ceding snaps to Newman. He's not nearly as mobile as his predecessor, and Hartman has also show a tendency to lock into a receiver, namely Sage Surratt, and force balls his way downfield. Outside of Surratt, the Deacons receiving corps is inexperienced, which won't aid Hartman's development. There's upside here as a bit of a gunslinger, but Hartman is unlikely to be matchup proof in his first year as a full time starter.
