Leaves Maryland for NBA
CMaryland
April 7, 2020
Smith announced Tuesday that he'll forgo his final two seasons at Maryland to enter the 2020 NBA Draft. He intends to sign with an agent and keep his name in the draft, according to Evan Daniels of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith's decision to leave Maryland was fully expected, as he's projected to go in the first round of most mock drafts. His departure will represent a huge loss for the Terrapins after a dazzling sophomore season in which he averaged 15.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.4 blocks and 1.0 three-pointer in 31.3 minutes per game while shooting 53.8 percent from the floor and 36.8 percent from distance. Rising sophomore Chol Marial currently profiles as the top candidate to replace Smith as the Terps' starting center in 2020-21, but expect coach Mark Turgeon to scour the transfer market this offseason to add further depth to the position.
