Training Camp Notes: Brady's Ban Upheld

It was a relatively wild day in the world of NFL. There were suspension appeals aplenty, and a broken cell phone to boot. While there are still only a couple of teams that have kick-started their training camps, we're getting closer to the good stuff. Tomorrow, veterans from 11 different teams will report, and the news will start rolling in. For now, we have some tidbits to satiate your football fever.

  • He tried his best to fight it, but Tom Brady will miss the first four games of the NFL season after commissioner Roger Goodell upheld his suspension Tuesday. Brady, who was suspended for his role in the notorious "Deflategate," will likely leave the Patriots' offense in the hands of second-year quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo at the start of the season. Garoppolo threw the ball in three games last season, piling up 182 yards and a touchdown, and completing 70.3 percent of his passes. New England's offense can sometimes be seen as a product of Brady's talent, so it will be interested to see how the young gun handles being a starter for four games.
  • Le'Veon Bell has negotiated with the league to reduce his his three-game suspension to two games. Bell was suspended in April for his August 2014 arrest on DUI and marijuana possession charges. With the smaller suspension, Bell's fantasy value looks even better. The third-year back piled up over 2,200 yards from scrimmage last season, and he'll be an attractive addition for any owner. This comes on the heels of yesterday's news that Bell is close to fully healed from the knee injury he suffered late last season. It's been a good first two days of training camp for the running back's prospective draft position.
  • Marques Colston was placed on the PUP list Tuesday. He can be activated from the preseason PUP list at any time before the regular season, which makes this move less notable than starting the regular season on the PUP list. But it's still something to keep an eye on. Colston, who turned 32 in June, has seen his production drop in each of the last two years.
  • The 49ers placed Carlos Hyde on the non-football injury list Tuesday without specifying what kind of injury was plaguing the running back. Hyde is expected to step in for the departed Frank Gore and contribute in a big way this season. He reportedly isn't expected to be on the list for very long.
  • Todd Gurley's status is still unclear, and will remain that way until the Rams' full training camp gets underway. But the rookie running back reportedly passed his conditioning test Tuesday and will begin training camp on the team's active roster. Gurley is still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered Nov. 15. The passed conditioning test, coupled with yesterday's report that he is not expected to begin the year on the PUP list, makes Gurley an intriguing option if other people in your league are scared off by the injury.
  • Kansas City will be looking to air the ball out at least a little more than they did last season, and it seems Albert Wilson will be a part of that equation. Wilson, who missed most of mini-camp with a hamstring injury, is reportedly entering training camp as the Chiefs' No. 2 wide receiver. Wilson earned the No. 2 spot late in 2014, piling up 12 receptions for 209 yards in the last four games of the season. Free-agent acquisition Jeremy Maclin will be the team's undisputed No. 1 passing option, which could help Wilson see favorable coverage this year if he gets to start.
