Training Camp Notes: Friday Game Fallout

- Doug Martin managed just six yards on the ground and two through the air in limited touches Friday. The interior of his offensive line looked terrible in the Bucs' preseason opener, which should give you pause if you're considering investing a high pick on him. If he stays healthy he can't possibly be as bad as he was last season, and he's still capable of returning big value as a second or third round selection, but without better blocking in front of him Martin's odds of replicating his huge rookie season are low. It won't do Josh McCown any favors either.

- Emmanuel Sanders is dealing with a quad injury. It doesn't seem to be serious, but given his new surroundings he probably won't want to miss too much time. Peyton Manning has plenty of other weapons if he doesn't get much of a chance to develop chemistry with Sanders, and it might be unreasonable to expect him to simply step in and inherit most of Eric Decker's production. He might be better viewed as a mid-season trade target than someone to acquire at the draft table given his current ADP.

- Nick Toon saw some snaps with the first team offense in Friday's preseason opener for the Saints, and while his size and skill set has him marked as Marques Colston's eventual replacement in the Saints' offense, the two were on the field at the same time Friday. Brandin Cooks (who had a big game Friday) and Kenny Stills are getting the buzz right now, but Toon has had a good camp so far too. Don't forget about him. In fact, given how all three have looked so far, Robert Meachem shouldn't expect to have much to do this season.

- speaking of the buzz out of New Orleans, Khiry Robinson is the 'it' boy in the Saints' backfield at the moment, a sleeper with tremendous upside, but Mark Ingram had by far the stronger game Friday. Ingram is still on top of the depth chart, and while both will see touches (along with Pierre Thomas) this year don't reach too early for Robinson.

- Devonta Freeman had a big game Friday, racking up 107 yards from scrimmage on just 11 touches, but appears to be fourth on the Falcons' depth chart at the moment. Don't be fooled by the placement, which is likely just typical "earn your spot, rookie" stuff. If Steven Jackson goes down, Atlanta won't hesitate to put Freeman into at least a timeshare with Jacquizz Rodgers, and even getting 10-15 touches a game he can do some damage (as he showed Friday, albeit mostly against the Dolphins' second half scrubs).

- Zach Miller put on a show Friday against the Eagles, and despite not having played an NFL game since 2011 he might now be the favorite to back up Martellus Bennett at tight end for the Bears. That would be the same Martellus Bennett who got suspended by the team for piledriving first round pick Kyle Fuller during a practice (which is what gave Miller first team snaps in the preseason opener) and who's worn out his welcome with two organizations already. If Miller continues to demonstrate he can be a competent replacement, Bennett's next screw-up could be his last in Chicago.

- sticking with the Bears, Chris Williams was brought in to take Devin Hester's return role, but he's shown more than enough as a receiver so far (including a 73-yard TD catch from Jimmy Clausen in the second half Friday) to earn a bigger role on the club than that. The third receiver spot is wide open behind Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and while Williams is technically a rookie he does have over 2300 receiving yards and 17 TDs to show for his three seasons in the CFL. Unless you count return stats it's too early to consider drafting him in any but the deepest of leagues, especially given that he tweaked a hamstring making that TD catch Friday, but keep him on your radar.
