Training Camp Notes: Out Of The Blue

- Arian Foster's absence from practice has given more snaps to rookie Alfred Blue, who's responded with some excellent runs and a picture-perfect blitz pickup during Friday's drills. Blue's a big, bruising runner who had very similar measurables to Foster's coming out college, and while Andre Brown is technically the second back on the Texans' depth chart, Blue might be the best plug-n-play option for Houston should Foster once again break down. If he continues to shine in camp, move Blue up close to the top of your 'late round sleepers' list.

- Julius Thomas was held out of Saturday's practice with a minor thigh bruise. While this particular injury isn't a serious one, it is a reminder that even in his breakout 2013 he missed a couple of games, and saw action in just nine total games his first two years in the league. Thomas' upside is massive in the Broncos offense, but he also comes with a lot more risk than, say, Vernon Davis.

- Jordan Cameron also came off the field Saturday with an injury to his shoulder, although the Browns insist the move was just precautionary. Like Thomas, Cameron had a surprise breakout last year, and his roller coaster production was largely at the mercy of the erratic performances Cleveland got from their QBs. That quarterback situation is still unsettled, and with Josh Gordon's status still up in the air until at least Monday as well, it's tough to predict how many targets, and how much defensive attention, Cameron will get in 2014.

- Charles Clay was the third 2013 breakout tight end to suffer a minor injury this weekend, limping away from Saturday's practice with a right leg issue. Unlike Thomas, Clay has been relatively healthy through his three years in the NFL, and unlike Cameron he mostly knows who his QB and main competition for targets will be. The Dolphins have also been playing around with a no-huddle offense in camp, as the usual league-wide copycat tendencies have begun focusing in on Chip Kelly's frenzied Philly attack. Clay's production last season might represent his ceiling, but unlike the other two young TEs above there's less reason with Clay to think a drop-off might be coming.

- Staying with the Fish, Knowshon Moreno is still favoring his surgically-repaired knee when he walks, and there's now talk he might not play in any of the club's preseason games. Running backs have a smaller learning curve than some other positions when they join a new organization, but Moreno's chances of taking the starting job away from Lamar Miller or even seeing significant carries to begin the season are looking increasingly remote.

- A minor oblique injury kept Drew Brees off the field Saturday. The Saints are saying all the right things about it, and Brees has been a near iron man for New Orleans (missing just one game in eight seasons) but the quarterback is also 35 years old and is coming off a season in which he was sacked a career-high 37 times. The Saints front office did little to upgrade the offensive line in the offseason, instead counting on a young improving receiving corps to get the offense back to the quick-trigger ways that have kept Brees upright for so long. He should in theory be fine, but for once there's actually legitimate reason for a bit of concern with Brees.
