Training Camp Notes: Wide Receivers with Leg Injuries

  • Jared Abbrederis did not participate in training camp Friday as the Packers fear he may have torn his ACL. Abbrederis was hoping to fill a void in the Packers' receiving corp after the team lost James Jones to Oakland. A source told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that a preliminary test showed a possible anterior cruciate ligament tear, but the Packers are waiting for more diagnostic tests to confirm this hypothesis. The Packers have not made an official announcement on the injury.
  • Niners' receiver Michael Crabtree is believed to have a minor hamstring injury. It seems like Crabtree is completely over the Achilles injury that slowed him down in 2013 and has otherwise looked sharp in training camp this year. Fellow receiver Brandon Lloyd has been sidelined in as well with an unspecified injury. Crabtree is expected to make a full recovery before the regular season, but for the time being, Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington will pick up extra reps in practice.
  • Julio Jones continues to be held out back-to-back practices.  He said that his surgically repaired foot feels great and that he is adapting well to a new shoe that gives his foot more stability when making cuts.  The Atlanta-Journal Constitution does not expect Jones to play until at least the third preseason game. Jones' goal is to return for the season opener, and it seems like he is on track to achieve that goal.
  • Panthers rookie Kelvin Benjamin injured his knee in practice last Sunday, but he could return to the field as soon as Saturday. "He ran well today," Panthers coach Ron Rivera noted Friday. "Depending on how he is first thing in the morning, he'll probably be on the field tomorrow." Benjamin is in the perfect position to succeed this season because the Panthers' top four leaders in catches from last season are no longer on the team. Quarterback Cam Newton can use Benjamin's large 6-5, 240 pound frame as an easy red-zone target.
  • Josh Gordon's appeal of his year-long suspension probably won't have a ruling until at least Monday when commissioner  Roger Goodell returns to New York. Goodell is in Canton, Ohio this weekend for the Hall of Fame Weekend festivities. Gordon could make it back in time for Saturday's team scrimmage in Cleveland, but his status for that practice remains doubtful. It seems like the ruling on Gordon's appeal is just around the corner, which will give clarity for everyone on Gordon's availability for the season.
  • Marquise Goodwin injured his hamstring in practice Friday. As the fourth wide out on the depth chart, Goodwin absence comes at an inoportune time. With status questionable going forward, it'll be hard for him to fight for a spot higher up on the depth chart.
  • Riley Cooper is still dealing with a foot injury that he suffered on the first day of training camp. He was seen walking around with a boot on his left leg, which coach Chip Kelly said was just a preventative measure. Kelly expects Cooper to be back within a couple of days.
  • Texans' running back Arian Foster is dealing with an injury that coach Bill O'Brien described as "kind of a day-to-day thing." The exact injury is unknown, but Foster is not expected to miss many practices, and this does not seem like a serious issue.
