NHL Playoff Observations -- Round One Ends

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • How does Patrick Roy spell deja vu? Minnesota Wild. The last game he played was a Game 7 loss to the hands of the Wild. In overtime. And now his first playoff series as a coach ends the same bloody way.
  • Will there be an NHL Black Thursday, just like Black Monday in the NFL? Better yet -- should there be?
  • Never, EVER count your chicks before they hatch, particularly in San Jose. Wow.
  • Dany Heatley lives! Who knew? And he has five points -- one goal and four helpers -- in seven games. Rick Nash has only four and they're all assists. Who ends up with the most by the time their team is out?
  • Semyon Varlamov, Vezina candidate? Not a chance. What an awful performance.
  • Steve Mason admitted after Wednesday's game that a concussion kept him out of the lineup until Game 4. And that he had headaches up to the night before Game 4. Can someone refresh me on the NHL's concussion protocols? Oh right -- Bobby Clarke is still a Flyer. I get it.
  • Highway robbery. That's what Jonathan Quick did to the Sharkies. Cha-ching.
  • Anze Kopitar buys into the team concept -- that's why he delivers about 70 points a season. But his upside is 95 and that's exactly what he's showing this postseason. He has at least a point in each of the seven first-round games and 10 overall. Sweet.
