Tuesday NFL Notes

Percy Harvin will need surgery on his hip, likely wiping out his season. With Sidney Rice off to Switzerland for treatment on his knee (yes, you read that correctly) Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and Zach Miller should all get a boost, particularly Tate. Rice could still be fine in which case he's the team's No. 1 target, but that his knee is already bothering him - to the point where he'd travel overseas to deal with it - doesn't bode well.

Knowshon Moreno, Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball all split first-team reps in practice. While Ball probably has the most upside as a runner, this competition could come down to who best protects Peyton Manning.

Nick Toon continues to shine in training camp as he consistently made the routine and spectacular catches in Tuesday's practice. Toon, who missed all of his rookie season with a foot injury, is competing for targets with Joseph Morgan and rookie Kenny Stills behind Lance Moore and Marques Colston. While Morgan was named the No. 3 WR in recent days, it's hard to see that being set in stone if Toon (son of former Jets great Al Toon) outplays him in camp.

E.J. Manuel is outplaying Kevin Kolb early on. It's a tiny sample, and they've yet to play in a preseason game, but Manuel is the one with any semblance of upside, so in deeper leagues (or 2-QB ones) you should be gambling on him over Kolb anyway.

A.J. Jenkins left practice with a hamstring injury. Last year's first-round pick is slated to start opposite Anquan Boldin for now, but he'll need to get reps, or that will change.

Ryan Williams (knee) felt better Tuesday and decided against seeking a second medical opinion. He's still injury prone and battling for a role behind Rashard Mendenhall. We suppose there's upside here should Mendenhall get hurt, but Williams has never proven he can hold up to the rigors of the NFL, and the team brought in two rookies at the position as a result.

Ahmad Bradshaw (feet) expects to be back on the field in a couple weeks. There was no report of a setback, just a veteran back coming off an injury taking his time to work back. At this point he should be fine for the start of the season.

Vincent Brown (ankle) looks healthy and sharp in camp so far. There's competition for targets with Danario Alexander, Malcom Floyd, Keenan Allen and Antonio Gates around, but all four are injury prone, and Brown could emerge as Philip Rivers top possession target if he stays healthy.
