NHL Stanley Cup Observations -- Game Five

Just a few things that caught my eye ...

  • Trick or treat -- Jonathan Quick is spooked! He's spent the last two games deep in his net instead of playing with the blue paint behind him. And he's off-angle and out-of-shape far too often. He needs to get his head back in the game ... and his butt away from the goal line.
  • Who's your daddy? Mike Richards found out when Zach Parise popped him into the player's bench on the PP. Parise just wanted it more.
  • Anton Volchenkov has a face only a mother could love, courtesy of Mike Richards' stick. That lip looks like a fisherman sewed it up with 8-lb test. It's going to swell right up to his shnozz.
  • The NHL sees an upside in its declining TV ratings this postseason. The Euro Cup averages a Super Bowl a day, at least from a ratings perspective. I'm pretty sure which one would make me happy. And I'm not even a footie fan.
  • Talk about living the dream. Bryce Salvador is just two points shy of equaling his output from his best regular season ever (16 points). And in just 23 games.
  • Any chance the Clippers, Lakers AND Kings all lose?
  • New Jersey was horrendous in that first period, but somehow managed a 1-0 lead. Lucky or good? Or both?
  • Poor Canucks. Dustin Brown says the Devils are "... the best team we've played so far." He's right.
  • Speaking of Brown -- he has 17 points, but just two in his last seven games. And his two hits were his lowest this postseason since Game 4 against the Coyotes.
  • Finally, a game worthy of watching and probably because both teams had opportunities because of mistakes. Bring on more imperfect hockey. Please?
  • The Devils invited Charlie Sheen to Game 5 after he was refused re-entry to Game 4 in L.A. after slipping outside for a smoke. I wonder if they invited that buxom adult video star so she could sit near Darryl Sutter. Then again, nothing gets a rise out of that guy. Why waste the seat.
  • The Norfolk Admirals won the Calder Cup today, sweeping the Toronto Marlies. Four guys who impressed me on those two teams? Dustin Tokarski and Cory Conacher on the Admirals; both will compete for roster spots with the Bolts next year. Ditto Ben Scrivens and Matt Frattin for the Leafs.
