NHL Playoff Observations -- Saturday Night

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • The Flyers have made a goaltending switch in half of their games this postseason. Put Pekka Rinne in orange and the Flyers would have just played their fifth, maybe sixth, game today.
  • Which sisters had a better week -- Kate and Pippa, or Henrik and Daniel? I know where my vote lies and I didn't even watch the royal wedding.
  • I tuned in to Philly-Boston and ended up seeing Braveheart. The Flyers' composites were wielded with the same authority and effectiveness as those big, heavy Louisville Sluggers swung by those kilted dudes.
  • The orange sea in the stands in Philly was impressive. It's probably the best color bath any arena has had this postseason.
  • Speaking of color, Vancouver's Green Men got a call from the Gestapo -- sorry, NHL head office -- about their headstands and other antics beside the visitor's penalty box. And now, they can't "touch the glass." Fans are just short for fanatic -- why try to neuter a little harmless fun?
  • Moving on to neutering, Mike Fisher laid the separator on Ryan Kesler; the big Orca was not impressed. Good thing sticks are composite now. Splinters down there can be a real beeatch.
  • Now whoa -- David Krejci. Was that payback for the games you missed in the Philly series last season? Nice afternoon.
  • Preds' coach Barry Trotz isn't superstitious at all. He enters the team bench with precisely 1:52 left in the intermission. Every intermission. In every game he's coached for Nashville.
  • Brad Marchand continues to impress me. Eight points in as many games? Keeper leaguers should get on board now; this kid is going to be very valuable, very soon.
  • Look who showed up -- it only took Mike Richards eight games to get a goal.
  • Roberto Luongo was Rembrandt for the first 60 minutes; the rest of the Canucks just finger painted. He was the only reason they were even in that game.
  • Godspeed to Radek Martinek who is in hospital overseas with a spinal injury and concussion suffered at the world championships. Sure puts it all in perspective.
