NHL Playoff Observations -- Thursday Night

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Antti Niemi -- missing link or broken one? L.A. had no business being in a tie game after two periods.
  • Penner needs a few rare earth magnets to help him get his north-south game re-aligned. This east-west approach makes him about as useful as a newly-gelded mule.
  • Ryan Miller and Carey Price -- two awesome performances. Mind you, neither guy saw a single screen. Clear looks like that makes goaltending a whole lot easier.
  • How happy do you think Dany Heatley is? He had just two goals in 20 postseason games before that early snipe. The monkey is back in the cage.
  • So exactly when did Jumbo Joe Thornton go from Pillsbury turnover boy to king of the takeaways? I never thought I'd see the day...
  • Ian White was 25.2 seconds away from the period of his career. Then along came an ugly forearm shiver from behind by Jarret Stoll. That should have been five for boarding and a boot. And supplemental discipline. There was no penalty on the play; we may not see White again this postseason.
  • Scott Gomez was the best Hab on Thursday night. I guess that contract was worth it after all.
  • Speaking of Niemi. Do you think he was in San Jose's master plan all along? After all, that Niklas Hjalmarsson offer sheet forced the Hawks to match it. And then they had to let Niemi go. I'm just saying.
  • Could the Habs and Bruins be any slower? Yawwwwwn.
