NFL Training Camp Notes

Pierre Thomas (right knee sprain) appeared to still be limping as he left the locker room Monday, and his chance of playing Week 1 is apparently "looking slim." – A new injury (a laceration) that required stitches is supposedly "not real significant," but the first injury was worrisome enough. Thomas has been slow to heal, and while it's typically better to think long-term, a knee injury can't be overlooked, and this has officially become significant.

Carnell Williams is listed as the top RB on the Bucs' initial regular season depth chart – Of course, this isn't all that meaningful this time of year, but it does further suggest Derrick Ward is being drafted too high. For what it's worth, Williams did look impressive during the Bucs' third preseason game, as he's apparently beat the odds by returning from a second serious patella injury. Williams is a must-add in any league he's not owned, but those are few and far between. Tampa Bay's RB situation is one to avoid in fantasy leagues.

Following Monday's practice, coach Jim Schwartz announced that Matthew Stafford will start Sunday's season opener at New Orleans – Not a surprise. Stafford's willingness to throw the deep ball is as big of a reason why the team decided to go with him as Daunte Culpepper's injured foot. Calvin Johnson is No. 3 on my (overall) board.
