Training Camp Notes

Brian Robiskie agrees to a four-year contract with the Browns.  He will challenge for the #2 WR spot for Cleveland.  He could also play a bigger role if Braylon Edwards' ankle injury proves to be nagging heading into the regular season.

Kellen Clemens open training camp as the Jets #1 quarterback.  This should not be a surprise given the experience difference at the pro level between him and Mark Sanchez.  However, Sanchez has a five-year, 45-million dollar contract, not the type of money given to a backup quarterback.  In shallower leagues, neither is worth owning past a backup for this season, but Sanchez has a lot of long-term upside.

Joey Galloway was on the field as the Patriots began their Thursday afternoon practice at Gilette Stadium.  He's slated to begin the season as the #3 WR behind Randy Moss and Wes Welker, and posted three straight seasons of 1000+ receiving yards before battling a foot injury in 2008.  Galloway is another reason to bump Tom Brady's stats, and could provide nice dividends if anything happens to Moss or Welker.

Vincent Jackson will likely avoid a NFL suspension this season after recently appealing a judge's ruling in his DUI case.  Basically the case won't have any ramifications for this season, meaning he'll still be the top wideout for San Diego.  For the past few seasons he's been on everyone's sleeper list; this may be the year he busts through.

According to Matt Jones, several teams are interested in signing him.  HIs athleticism has never been in doubt, but character issues are a concern.  In the past anyone who had him as a starter has not done well; he's worth an end-game speculation in deeper leagues at best.

Lion coach Jim Schwartz plans to make a decision on his starting quarterback "somewhere around the final preseasion game".  With a starting position his for the taking, Daunte Culpepper has reportedly shown up to camp in great shape.  That being said, Matthew Stafford is still the future quarterback of the franchise, and the Lions will not hesitate to put the top draft pick under center if he proves ready.

Knowshon Moreno remains unsigned and with only six first-rounders signed to terms, it's unclear when he will join the Broncos.  Remember that Mike Shanahan is gone and Moreno is the best option at running back that Denver has, despite when he makes it to camp.  Don't let his contract talks stop you from viewing him as a top-20 running back.

The Steelers signed Heath Miller to a six-year contract.  Miller posted his second straight 500+ receiving season for the SB champs and is a good second option at tight end for fantasy teams.  GIven the Steelers run-first mentality, their isn't much upside here outside of more than the three touchdowns he scored last season.  Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall owners should be happy that their excellent pass-blocking tight end will be a happy camper heading into the season.

McGahee came off the PUP list on Thursday.  McGahee has already stated that he needs to win back the starting position from Ray Rice.  He's coming off a career-low 671 yards last year, but seems motivated to prove he's the starter in Baltimore.  Rice is still the better option, but owners would wise to handcuff themselves with McGahee if possible.
