Can't It Wait Until February?

It's no secret that top assistants in the NFL will be in demand for head coaching vacancies, but why do Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo (and many others) have to interview while the season is still going on?

I realize teams want to get their head coach in place as soon as possible, but how much of a difference is three weeks going to make? And if I'm Giants management, I don't want my coaches daydreaming about being the man in another city - I want them focused on the task at hand.

At this point, it's a common practice to let assistants do this, but I don't see why the teams don't get together and agree not to interview until after the season is over.
