We're All Arena Leaguers Now

My antipathy to the BCS and the college football bowl system isverywelldocumented, but it's taken another step up the ladder of irritation this season because it's turning college football into the arena league. Does defense matter anymore?

After Oklahoma beat rival Oklahoma State, 61-41, on Saturday, Sooners center Jon Cooper said, "If 61 points isn't enough, I don't know what will be."

How about a little defense? In a game in which Oklahoma hoped to impress voters, the Sooners gave up 41 points! Real impressive. The OU-OSU game was one of the worst I saw all season. Let me guess, someone scored another touchdown? What a boring game -- unless you like the pinball-style scoring of the arena league.

This, however, is just the natural evolution of a system that rewards so-called style points. Fireworks, fireworks, fireworks. Little else else matters.

Florida, Alabama and USC have great defenses. But if Florida beats Alabama for the SEC title, the nation's three best defenses could be shut out of the BCS title game.

Until college football takes opinion out of the formula for crowning a champion, it will always be a joke.
