Box Score Breakdown -- Tuesday, October 7th

The NBA is back! Well, not all the way back, but preseason basketball is still basketball. And now is the time that fantasy leagues start organising their draft times, owners start digging into their research and pouring over pages and pages of notes and stats, and everyone racks their brain to come up with the punniest team name they can think of.

So, what went on in Tuesday's action that all fantasy owners should be aware of?

Andrew Wiggins Leads Wolves In Scoring

Albeit without Nikola Pekovic and Kevin Martin, it was encouraging to see Wiggins put up such an impressive line in his NBA debut. Wiggins ended with 18 points (4-11 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 8-10 FT), four rebounds, three assists, one steal, and three blocks in a game high 32 minutes, showing the sort of multi category versatility we were hoping would become a mainstay of his game a few years from now.  His fantasy value may be muted when Martin and Pekovic return, but the early showing was positive.

George Hill Looks In Control

Hill, who was an abject fantasy disappointment last season, stuffed the stat sheet without Paul George and Lance Stephenson around, guiding the Pacers to the victory. Hill had a team-high 17 points (6-9 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 4-5 FT), six rebounds, seven assists, and two steals in just 20 minutes as the starting point guard - a good sign for the season when he'll have to assume a bigger responsibility for this team. Hill will be a nice pick in the later rounds of drafts, and seems likely to be able to improve on his 2013-14 season.

Derrick Rose Misses All Four Field Goal Attempts

Rose continued his poor shooting, tallying only six points (0-4 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 6-8 FT) in 14 minutes, adding only a solitary rebound and one assist to his box score. At least he came through unscathed. Jimmy Butler led the Bulls in scoring with 18 points (7-9 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 4-4 FT) in 29 minutes.

Greg Monroe Dominates In Bench Role

In what could be a sign of things to come, Monroe came off the bench behind Andre Drummond and Josh Smith to score 24 points (9-14 FG, 6-7 FT) with nine rebounds, including five at the offensive end in 31 minutes. The lineup felt much more balanced and even if he plays the sixth man role, he'll have decent fantasy value.

Aaron Gordon Starts Preseason Debut

With Channing Frye sitting with an MCL sprain, Gordon got the start, somewhat surprisingly, over Kyle O'Quinn. The rookie from Arizona scored six points (2-6 FG, 2-6 FT) and grabbed eight rebounds with a block and showed his legendarily bad free throw shooting in 28 minutes. When Frye returns, Gordon won't have any real fantasy value, but it was interesting to see how coach Jacques Vaughn used his rotation. Victor Oladipo also sat out, with Evan Fournier starting in the backcourt alongside rookie Elfrid Payton.

James Ennis Leads Heat With 14 Points

The Heat's rookie from the 2013 Draft scored in double digits for the second straight game after leading the Heat in scoring in their opener against the Pelicans. He tallied 14 points (6-11 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 1-2 FT), and also grabbed 10 rebounds with five assists in 29 minutes and is showing a scoring punch for a team that needed any sort of contribution from its bench last season. Ennis is probably an afterthought in 10-12 team leagues, but may be a solid source of stats in deeper formats. Interestingly, Norris Cole started over Mario Chalmers in the loss to the Magic.

Bojan Bogdanovic Starts At Small Forward

With Alan Anderson still ailing from an abdominal issue, Bogdanovic got the start, but only managed eight points (3-8 FG, 2-4 3Pt) in 26 minutes. The starting job seems to be between the rookie and Anderson and whoever gets the role should have nice, late round value, mainly for scoring. Kevin Garnett also started over Mirza Teletovic and Mason Plumlee, but the two younger guys both out produced the veteran.

European Big Men Take Over For Rockets

Lithuanian Donatas Motiejunas and Greek Kostas Papanikolaou both shone in the Rockets victory over in-state rivals Dallas on Tuesday. Motiejunas scored 18 points (7-11 FG, 4-8 FT) with three rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes, while rookie Papanikolaou ended with 12 points (3-11 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 4-5 FT) and six rebounds in 26 minutes. Starters Dwight Howard and Terrence Jones played just 36 minutes between them, but it was encouraging to see the form of both young big men. Papanikolaou has sneaky value as a three-point shooting power forward, and both Europeans got minutes in preference to newly signed Jeff Adrien.

Dirk Nowitzki Sits With Mild Hip Discomfort

Al-Farouq Aminu started in Nowitzki's absence and did what we expect from him, scoring eight points (1-5 FG, 0-3 3Pt, 6-8 FT) and grabbing 11 rebounds, with a steal and two blocks in just 20 minutes. Nowitzki's injury isn't serious, but if Dirk was to miss any time, Aminu will be a nice source of defensive hustle stats, as well as an elite rebounding small forward. Chandler Parsons, Tyson Chandler, Jameer Nelson, and Raymond Felton all made their Dallas debuts, with Nelson getting the start over Felton and Devin Harris, but not doing anything to distance himself in the competition.

All Five Jazz Starters Tally Double Figures In Points

Alec Burks started over rookie Dante Exum and scored 12 points (4-10 FG, 4-7 FT) with four rebounds and four steals in 30 minutes. Exum still got 29 minutes off the bench, but could only manage four points (1-5 FG, 2-2 FT), three rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block. Burks was joined by Enes Kanter (11 points), Derrick Favors (10 points), Trey Burke (11 points), and Gordon Hayward (11 points) in scoring in double digits in the blowout of the Blazers. Burks is the better fantasy prospect for the season as it seems the Jazz will bring Exum along slowly.

Terrence Ross Sits After Injuring Knee And Ankle

The injury to Ross isn't serious and is due back soon, but his absence opened up a spot in the rotation. Coach Dwayne Casey went with his forgotten man, Landry Fields, who showed why he has been forgotten, failing to hoist a shot in 14 minutes and ending with just two assists. DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry were both on their respective games, scoring over 20 points each.

Nik Stauskas Starts Over Ben McLemore, Scores 12 Points

Stauskas was red-hot, scoring 12 points (5-6 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 1-1 FT) and adding an assist and a steal in 26 minutes, while McLemore added 12 points (5-10 FG, 2-5 3Pt) with two steals in 27 minutes. This has the makings of a total minutes share, making it hard to own either guy in standard fantasy leagues. Interestingly, Ramon Sessions started over Darren Collison at point guard and it's hard to know what to make of that for the regular season. If the minutes are distributed as they were in this game, Collison's value takes a significant hit.

Spencer Hawes Productive In Clippers Debut

Hawes played 24 minutes behind DeAndre Jordan (24 minutes) and scored nine points (3-5 FG, 3-4 FT) with eight rebounds and a whopping five turnovers in the loss to the Warriors on Tuesday. He will find it hard pressed to be as productive as he was last season in both Philadelphia and Cleveland, but as an end of the draft center, he'll still have some decent performances.
