Start the Party -- Penguins lift Lord Stanley

Just a few things that caught my eye:

  • Seven. It was seven years ago TO THE DAY that Sidney Crosby lifted his first Stanley Cup. Hockey gods or what?!
  • Matt Murray's 15 wins as a rookie netminder this postseason puts him among the likes of Ron Hextall and Patrick Roy. And Cam Ward. Here's hoping he has more of the first two in him than the last one.

  • Trevor Daley, broken ankle and all, gets the first pass with the Cup. Pascal Dupuis, forced to retire because of blood clots, took the Cup after that. Who was next? Ironically, it was Marc Andre Fleury, who may have played his last game in Pittsburgh.
  • Logan Couture made an outstanding save to keep a second empty-netter from the twine. He also finished as the postseason's top scorer. Who knew he could do it all? #PrideofLucan
  • Melker Karlsson is my hero. I can't believe he got up after those splits into the end boards at speed, let alone returned to the game. I wonder what will hurt more -- the loss or those splits? No magic spray is going to take any of that away.
  • Martin Jones is one helluva a goalie. I wonder how soon he'll be considered the best player in the trade that saw Milan Lucic head to L.A. He's already the best one in the deal to San Jose. Sean Kuraly who?
  • Is Gary Bettman the most-hated Commissioner of any major sport? San Jose's fans carried on the annual tradition of trying to drown out his voice with boos. And they did very, very well.
  • Bottom line? The Penguins were the better team. Hands down. They were faster. Deeper. There was a different hero every game. That's the definition of team.
  • RIP Mr. Hockey. Two records that will never be broken -- 20 or more goals in 22 straight seasons and top-10 in scoring for 21 consecutive years. Just think about that for a minute.
