Is sports betting legal in North Carolina?

Last Updated: Feb 29, 2024

Fact Checked By: Anthony Cervino

Sports betting in North Carolina is legal both online and at retail locations. However, online sports betting is not yet live and operational as state regulators gear up for the launch of North Carolina sports betting on March 11, 2024. The good news is that Tar Heel State bettors do not have to wait until March 11 to sign up. Sports bettors in the Tar Heel State can pre-register for the top North Carolina sportsbooks beginning on March 1, 2024, and when they do, they can secure generous welcome offers thanks to exclusive North Carolina sportsbook promos

At the present time, sports bettors have the option of in-person betting. There are two Caesars sportsbooks located in the western region of the state, both within tribal casinos — the similarly named Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort and Harrah's Cherokee Valley River. Additionally, a third tribal casino, the temporary Catawba Two Kings Casino, is open in Kings Mountain, situated west of Charlotte.

Daily Fantasy Sports are allowed statewide and horse racing betting is only allowed at the sportsbooks above. Daily Fantasy Sports have never been formally legalized, but 2006 legislation considers them games of skill, so they continue to operate within North Carolina.
