2023 Fantasy Outlook
To this point, Fernando has not played more than 13 minutes per game across his four-year career. He played in just 39 games during the 2022-23 season, averaging 3.9 points and 3.5 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per outing. The Hawks have both Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu to choose from when it comes to center minutes, meaning Fernando is likely to be on the outside looking in when it comes to meaningful playing time. He might be worth keeping an eye on, just in case a Capela trade happens at some point, but until then, he has very little fantasy value. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Bruno Afonso David Fernandes (known as Bruno Fernando) was born in 1998 in Luanda, Angola. Luanda is the nation's capital and a port city on the west coast of Southern Africa. He is the son of Bernardo Fernando and Natalia David. Bruno is one of eight siblings and has four brothers and three sisters. After playing on the 2014 FIBA Under-17 World Championship Angolan national team, Fernando joined the Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. That led to Fernando spending the 2016-17 season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, before he attended the University of Maryland. Fernando is the first ever Angolan-born player selected in the NBA draft. Fernando's favorite all-time NBA veteran is Kevin Garnett. Fans can follow Fernando on Twitter @BrunoFernandoMV and on Instagram @the_angolan_bf. Fernando originally committed to SMU, but decided to reopen his recruitment after spending a season with IMG Academy. He chose Maryland and quickly established himself as a big man for coach Mark Turgeon. Initially as a freshman, he came off the bench, but he started 20 of the team's 30 games. In his first year, he had three double-doubles, including 18 points and 16 rebounds in the February win over Rutgers. The offense focused more on Fernando in his sophomore season and he supplied 22 double-doubles, including seven straight during Big Ten play. The 6-10 native of Angola scored a career-high 25 points on 11-of-12 from the field in a January win over Indiana. He also snatched 19 rebounds in a win at Nebraska. Fernando led the Terrapins back to the Big Dance and had double-doubles in the win over Belmont and the loss to LSU. After two seasons of patrolling the paint and averaging 12.0 points and 8.7 rebounds for Maryland, Fernando declared for the 2019 NBA Draft where he was picked by the Atlanta Hawks with the 34th pick.

Retreats to bench
CAtlanta Hawks
April 17, 2024
Fernando will come off the bench for Wednesday's Play-In Tournament game against the Bulls, Lauren L. Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
Fernando drew the start in the final game of the regular season but he'll retreat to the second unit since Clint Capela (rest) is back in action. While it's assumed Atlanta will trim down their rotation, Fernando should see upwards of 20 minutes Wednesday.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could enter rotation
CAtlanta Hawks
February 4, 2024
Fernando has logged back-to-back healthy scratches following a five-game absence due to back spasms, but he could factor into the rotation due to Clint Capela being set for a multi-game absence with an adductor injury, Kevin Chouinard of the Hawks' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Fernando has compiled just 84 total minutes of action across 13 appearances with Atlanta this season. Onyeka Okongwu receiving developmental minutes likely remains the priority, but it will be interesting to monitor if Fernando is reintroduced to the rotation following his recent inactivity.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
A sophomore out of Maryland, Fernando ended up on the Hawks as the 34th overall pick in the 2019 Draft. Last season, he made the All-Big Ten First Team and the All-Big Ten Defensive Team with averages of 13.6 points on 60.7 percent shooting, 10.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.9 blocks in 30.0 minutes. While he struggled offensively in summer league -- 4.2 points per game across 26.8 minutes while shooting 31.2 percent -- he averaged a combined 4.7 blocks/steals. Alex Len is essentially a lock to be Atlanta's starting center, but there should be some competition for the backup job. Whatever minutes John Collins doesn't grab at center will be available for either Fernando or Damian Jones. That said, the chances of Fernando occupying a fantasy-relevant role are thin.
