2024 Fantasy Outlook
A 6-foot-3 lefty-hitting shortstop, Merrill split his age-20 season between High-A and Double-A. His 12.1 percent strikeout rate was exceptional for a prospect of his caliber who was young for his levels. Merrill's hit tool has a chance to be pretty special, but he also has above-average power potential and lacks pronounced lefty/righty splits. He's a decent athlete and could chip in double-digit steals early in his career. Merrill played the vast majority of his games at shortstop, but he also saw five games in left field, two games at second base and a game at first base. San Diego has an extremely shallow depth chart, so while Merrill's most natural positions may be spoken for, there should be room for him somewhere this summer. Read Past Outlooks
Not starting Friday
Merrill (groin) is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Merrill was taken out of the lineup ahead of Thursday's loss to the Rockies as a precaution, and he was expected to be back Friday, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. It appears the groin injury is still lingering, however, and the rookie outfielder will not start for a second consecutive game. With Merrill out of the lineup, Jose Azocar will start in center field, Jurickson Profar will be in left field and Manny Machado will make his return from his paternity leave to start at third base.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Chance to make Opening Day roster?
Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com speculates Merrill will "get a real chance" to earn an outfield job with the Padres during spring training.
ANALYSIS
The organization's top prospect received an invite to big-league spring training for the second straight year, but this time he may actually be able to earn a roster spot. Merrill split last season between the High-A and Double-A levels, finishing with 15 homers and a .770 OPS in 114 total games. The 20-year-old is a shortstop by trade, but he's been working in center field and left field of late, with Xander Bogaerts locked in at shortstop for San Diego.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
From strictly an advanced data standpoint, Merrill grades out favorably with the best hitting prospects in the game. A big 6-foot-3, lefty-hitting shortstop, Merrill has only played 45 games at Single-A and 22 games in the Arizona Fall League, but his 90th percentile exit velocity and zone contact rate (per Prospects Live) stand out as excellent marks regardless of age/level. He was sent to the AFL as a teenager to make up for the time he lost early in the year with a wrist injury, and while he hit just one home run in 98 plate appearances, scouts thought he was one of the best prospects in the league. Merrill will keep filling out his frame and all signs point to monster game power and a potentially plus hit tool, although he might not chip in more than a handful of steals. The Padres always push prospects of his ilk, so don't be surprised if Merrill spends a good chunk of his age-20 season at Double-A while ascending up prospect lists.
