Rest-of-Season Projections
2024 Fantasy Outlook
McCutchen looked rejuvenated early on in his return to Pittsburgh, posting an .823 OPS with eight homers and six steals through the end of May. An elbow injury sent him to the injured list and McCutchen's season ultimately ended in early September due to a partial tear of his left Achilles' tendon. The 37-year-old was in a walking boot for six weeks but the Pirates were happy enough with the reunion and confident enough in his health to bring him back for 2024. A former NL MVP, McCutchen's last All-Star appearance came back in 2015, though the skills have held up OK around the injuries. His strikeout rate still has never exceeded 23 percent and he walked at a 15.9 percent clip last season, the second-highest mark of his career. Unfortunately for those playing fantasy baseball, McCutchen is now UT-only, having made just eight appearances in the outfield last season. He's very much relevant but tougher to roster at this stage of his career given the missed time and lack of positional eligibility. Read Past Outlooks
Receives rest day
McCutchen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
McCutchen had started each of the previous three contests while going 4-for-12 with a home run, three RBI, three additional runs and a stolen base, but he'll get a breather as the Pirates and Mets wrap up their series with a day game after a night game. Bryan Reynolds will get a day off out of the outfield and serve as the Pirates' designated hitter while McCutchen rests.

Multiple years left?
McCutchen, who finished 2023 on the injured list with a partial Achilles tear, said Wednesday he plans to play at least two more seasons after re-signing with the Pirates for 2024 on a one-year, $5 million contract, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
ANALYSIS
McCutchen also indicated he hopes to end his career in Pittsburgh, which the organization also seems keen on. The 37-year-old had a .775 OPS, 12 homers and 11 steals in 112 games for the Pirates last season, and similar production in 2024 would make it easy for the organization to re-sign him again next offseason. McCutchen is likely to see most of his playing time at designed hitter and will enter the campaign one home run short of 300 for his major-league career.

McCutchen joined Milwaukee on a one-year, $8.5 million pact for 2022 and split time between designated hitter and the outfield. He played in 134 games and had a .237/.316/.384 slash line with 17 home runs, 69 RBI and eight stolen bases. His 98 wRC+ was the worst of his career, as was his .147 ISO. In recent years he's enjoyed most of his success against left-handed pitching, but that production fell off last season with a .738 OPS. McCutchen's decline will likely only continue as he enters his age-37 campaign, though he was still able to secure a $5 million pact with the Pirates for 2023. Now back at his old stomping grounds in Pittsburgh, McCutchen should be a lineup regular for a team short on established talent, which is likely to further limit his potential for runs and RBI.
