ANALYSIS
Moronta, 30, made two appearances for the Angels this season but spent most of the year at Triple-A Salt Lake. He'll look to land a new deal this offseason and will probably have to settle for a minor-league pact.

Could close after deadline
PSan Francisco Giants
July 13, 2019
Moronta, whose 3.15 FIP ranked 30th among qualified relievers entering play Saturday, could close for the Giants later in the season.
ANALYSIS
Will Smith, Sam Dyson and Tony Watson are all on the block, and if all three veterans are moved, Moronta could step in. There's a chance Moronta is traded as well, though that seems rather unlikely given he's under club control through 2023. The big righty gave up a run Friday in his first appearance of the second half, but he had allowed just two runs in his prior 15 appearances, and he has a pretty classic closer profile with a 97-mph heater and a swing-and-miss slider.

2018
Moronta is a reliever with a big fastball and a big waistline who has struck out 29.8% of the major-league hitters he has faced in his career. He has also walked 13.6% of those hitters, which is why he has not yet taken that step forward into the closer role. He missed all of 2020 recovering from shoulder surgery, but reports on his recovery have been positive. Manager Gabe Kapler is on record stating Moronta, should he show up to camp in better condition, is very much in the mix for the 2021 closer role. For that to materialize, he will have to cut down on the free passes because closers with WHIP marks over 1.30 walk a fine line. The fastball is impressive, the slider is crisp and if he ever finds control and gets the closer job, his value skyrockets. Start watching him Day 1 in camp for word on his conditioning and pounce early on good news.
It wasn't always pretty, but Moronta put together a second straight 50-plus-inning season with an ERA under 3.00 out of the Giants' bullpen. His 28.5 K% was well above average, but his 13.4 BB% was a bottom-15 mark among qualified relievers. He limited the damage, holding opposing hitters to a .195 batting average while using his swing-and-miss stuff to strand runners at an 81.2% clip. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn right labrum in early September and was forced to go under the knife, sidelining the right-hander for the next 9-to-11 months. Moronta is expected to remain out for the majority of the 2020 campaign, with a possible return coming in August if all goes well in his recovery process.
After rocketing up the organizational ladder in 2017, Moronta had a breakout season with the Giants in 2018. He barely made the Opening Day roster, but the right-hander came out of the gate hot, holding the opposition scoreless in his first seven appearances and not letting his ERA get north of 2.00 until mid-June. Free passes continued to hurt him, as he walked over a batter every two innings even during his good stretch to start the season, but he still finished with a 2.49 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 79:37 K:BB in 65 innings. The 25-year-old’s 3.28 FIP and 6.6% HR/FB suggest some regression is on the way, and there are a few other options to close in San Francisco’s bullpen. Even so, Moronta has the strikeout ability to warrant consideration in deeper leagues, and the potential is there for him to close down the road.
Moronta advanced three levels in 2017 despite dealing with a shoulder muscle issue during the summer months, which speaks to his notable talent. After finishing the 2016 season at High-A, the right-hander began last year at Double-A Richmond, progressed to Triple-A Sacramento in July and then made his big-league debut in September. Moronta has impressive stuff, with a fastball that averages over 95 mph and a good, sweeping slider, but he needs to harness his control to take the next step. His walk rates have been above 4.0 BB/9 at virtually every stop above rookie ball. If he can improve even marginally in that regard this season, Moronta should be able to carve out a prominent role in the Giants' bullpen.
