Acquired in a post-DFA trade with the Cardinals just after Opening Day, Valera bounced between Triple-A and the majors four times over the first half of the season. He was then included in Baltimore's return for Manny Machado. Even on the lowly Orioles, Valera found opportunities hard to come by (41 plate appearances in 12 games). A fractured finger officially ended his season. He hit .286 after joining the O's, but the totality of his offensive contributions still added up to just an 80 wRC+ after the move (59 for the season). Valera is a switch-hitter who can put bat to ball consistently and play all around the infield, but there's little power to speak of here and he's been caught on the basepaths as many times as he's been successful over the past two seasons. On the strength of his defensive versatility, Valera will have a chance to win a job in camp.
Long story short; Valera is a contact hitter without a path to at-bats. He earned a 40-man roster spot prior to the 2017 season by producing a stellar .341/.417/.415 line in 73 games with Triple-A Memphis the year prior. The young switch-hitter didn't disappoint in 2017 either, as he followed up his 2016 performance with a .314/.368/.450 line in 117 games with Memphis. He added a decent amount of power to his game last season, as he ripped 22 doubles, six triples and eight home runs in the minors -- all career highs. Still, the power is modest, as is the speed. He hasn't produced a strikeout rate north of 10 percent since his first season in pro ball, and he draws walks frequently. However, given St. Louis' depth at each infield position, Valera's ceiling seems to be that of a utility infielder in 2018.
There are many other prospects in the Cardinals system with more shine than Valera, but the 24-year-old switch hitter continues to hit nonetheless. 2016 marked his first time cracking the Triple-A roster, but he made the most of it by slashing .341/.417/.415 in 73 games with Memphis. Even more impressive was his BB:K ratio during his tenure with the Redbirds: in that span, he drew 31 walks and struck out just 22 times, elevating his contact rate to a stellar 90 percent. He possesses very little power (.074 ISO, zero home runs), but what he lacks in that department he makes up for with positional versatility. Valera is a long-shot to break camp with St. Louis, but his knack to get on base could help him garner a reserve utility role before the season's conclusion if he manages to keep up his torrid pace in the minors.
